Script and direction
Modern standard Uyghur is written in a variant of the Perso-Arabic alphabet (often called the Uyghur Arabic script). Text runs right-to-left at the line level, while numbers in educational and many practical contexts often follow the Arabic-script line direction or international conventions—always set dir="rtl" and an appropriate font (e.g. Noto Naskh Arabic) in user interfaces.
Letters and vowels
The alphabet includes letters adapted for sounds specific to Turkic languages. Vowel information is carried by dedicated vowel letters as well as contextual rules that learners study progressively. Official Romanization schemes and practical Latin spellings used online may differ slightly; our glossary uses a consistent learner-friendly Latin form alongside the Arabic headword so the same entry can be found by either script.
Why Latin appears alongside Arabic
Many textbooks, apps, and keyboards use Latin transliteration before learners master the Arabic script. Providing both forms on each glossary page helps search engines and language tools map queries like “uyghur word for water” to the correct Arabic form (سۇ su).
